Scoping report success
In September I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to compile a scoping report for Aberlour Child Care Trust (ACCT). Aberlour Orphanage was founded in 1875. The charity now delivers community-focused support services to help children and families from disadvantaged communities across Scotland. The historic records is a significant collection in the history of childcare in Scotland as well as being an important source of information for the service users themselves.
The scoping report was part of the Archives Revealed scheme run by the National Archives and the Pilgrim Trust. Due to lockdown restrictions I met with the Information Governance officer and the Head of Safeguarding online to discuss the parameters of the project. I arranged to view the majority of the historic records at Aberlour's lovely new offices in central Stirling. The records included admissions registers, minutes and financial information dating back to the orphanage's foundation in 1875. I analysed how the records were listed and made accessible currently as well as their storage conditions and made recommendations in the report. Aberlour will go on to use the report in discussions on the future care of their records.
