Working with the angels

09/04/2024

I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to catalogue the records of Angel's Share Glass in Bridge of Allan. The founder of the company, Tom Young, used to work for University of Stirling producing its scientific glassware. He then founded his own company Village Glass in 1979 which in turn became Angel's Share in 2012. His daughter, Karen Somerville, carries on the family tradition and, to preserve Young's legacy, approached University of Stirling Archives about depositing their records. They very generously paid to have the records catalogued first which is where I came in.

The collection has over 900 photographs many of them of Young at work in his studio or of the the products they made. Somerville wants the photographs digitised so they can be shared as a resource, for example with the Corning Museum of Glass. To this end, I catalogued all the photographs individually as well as the rest of the collection, doing all the work in just six days. The catalogue has now been uploaded into the university's system and can be seen here.
